Abstract

In this investigation aluminum metal matrix composites were prepared with varying weight percentages of SiC reinforcement (8, 10 and 12 weight percentages). Samples with identical composition were welded using tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding technique. The welding parameters were maintained same for all the samples. Thermal ageing of welded specimens was conducted to attain the peak age hardening conditions. Microstructural differences between aged and non-age hardened specimens were brought out in terms of misorientation, stored energy and residual stresses. The changes in the mechanical behavior of the welded joints due to varying composition of the specimens correlated to identical changes in the microstructures. The present study aims to address the role of SiC addition in aluminum metal matrix composites on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of the welded joints.
