Abstract
In this study a superelement-by-superelement (EBE) preconditioner is developed in conjunction with the conjugate gradient method for the solution of large problems resulting from the application of the finite element method. The proposed technique is based on a multi-element group partitioning of the entire structure. The approximate inverse of the global stiffness matrix which acts as a preconditioner is expressed by a second-order truncated Neumann series where an additive composition of the matrix by its superelement contribution is achieved. An important feature of this superelement preconditioner is its local additive nature which is susceptible to parallelization.
