Abstract

This paper presents an educational software tool with a user-friendly interface, which can be used in designing ferrite electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppressors. Furthermore, this simulation tool can be used for the calculation of electrical characteristics of these surface-mount components. Ferrite EMI suppressors are made of a conductive layer embedded in a ferrite monolithic structure. They are very successfully used for reducing or eliminating conducted EMI. To design EMI suppressors with optimal characteristics, the student has to choose both appropriate ferrite and conductive material, and the geometry of the inductor embedded in the ferrite material. In this paper the authors describe the modelling and design of EMI suppressors using this educational CAD tool.
