Abstract

In 1921, the principal of the Normal school in Jerusalem undertook the publication of an Arabic book of songs for schools. Taking into account the time and place of the publication one may consider it as a special event worth being brought to the attention of the scholars interested in Near Eastern music. It should be emphasized that while at that time a great many songbooks existed in Europe and the U.S., the collection under discussion seems tobe the first of its kind in the Arabic world. Therefore, the early date of the anthology, the place and time, and the cultural milieu in which and for which it has been conceived make its examination of a special interest.
