Abstract

Abstract An analysis is undertaken to formulate and evaluate a new criterion-of-merit for the transmutation of radioactive wastes by accelerator produced protons. Tractable expressions are developed to determine the effective role of the dominant processes involved. Based on a numerical assessment, it is concluded that proton induced transmutation of selective radioactive nuclear wastes associated with nuclear fission reactors is energetically feasible and deserving of a concerted experimental test using existing accelerators.
