Abstract

Abstract This paper assesses the adaptability of Solution-focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) specifically as practiced by a female therapist, Insoo Kim Berg at the Brief Therapy Center in Milwaukee, to the principles of feminist therapy according to five criteria established by Gluckstern & Ivey (1988): an egalitarian relationship; the use of community resources; active participation of the counsellor; information giving; and personal validation. While SFBT satisfies three of these criteria, significant points of departure were found to occur in the nature of the “active” participation of the counsellor and in the educational aspect of information giving.
