Abstract
Transverse discontinuities in a single mode parallel-plate waveguide are approximately treated using a class waveguide mode-annihilating operators in the spirit of the On-Surface Radiation Condition method. The method is applied to problems involving diaphragm discontinuities and steps in the waveguide's cross-section. Simple explicit formulae are derived for the transmission and reflection coefficients and are compared with other approximate methods. The comparisons are excellent with errors of the order of 5%.
