Abstract
A model has been developed to simulate the engagement of a single pair of wet-type clutch plates used in automatic transmissions. The equations governing the engagement are derived from the model and together with initial and boundary conditions they are solved numerically. Thus it is possible to calculate the important engagement characteristics such as film thickness, transmitted torque, interface temperature, heat generation rate and engine speed. In order to predict these characteristics more accurately information on clutch facing permeability, critical film thickness and boundary lubrication region characteristics must be known. Two examples are considered which illustrate the theory and the numerical procedure.
