Abstract

This paper presents an overview of published material in which the concept of advanced practice is discussed in relation to results from a qualitative research study. The paper incorporates a discussion of published material, the background to the study, a description of research methods and a discussion of the results. Three emerging themes are discussed: the identification of what constitutes advanced midwifery practice, the relationship between advanced practice for midwives, the role of the midwife and psychomotor skills and the potential role for midwives following completion of a masters degree in advanced midwifery practice. Advanced practice in midwifery is not synonymous with extending the role of midwives, and it is not about achieving psychomotor skills and knowledge currently identified in medicine and obstetrics, rather it is about developing midwifery practice in order to enhance quality of care.
