An Analysis of Derivational Suffixes Used in @Wetheurban Instagram Posts
The title of this research is "An Analysis of Derivational Suffixes Used in @Wetheurban Instagram Posts." The purpose of this research was to identify the forms of derivational suffixes and explain their function and meaning used in Instagram posts by @Wetheurban. The data for this research was derived from Instagram posts by @Wetheurban, which created this Instagram to increase personal power by 1000%.The data was collected by reading and highlighting the Instagram account @Wetheurban. The data for this study was analyzed qualitatively. This study used Plag's (2002) theory from his book "Word -Formation in English". The analysis showed four types of derivational suffixes: 14 nominal suffixes, 2 verbal suffixes, 10 adjectival suffixes, and 2 adverbial suffixes. Derivational suffixes have two functions: class-maintaining suffixes and class-changing suffixes. Suffixes found in the data source each have their own meaning, such as person or having something to do with X, result of X, state or quality, tending to, connected with, and so on.

Morphology is the study of linguistics that concerns about words and the structure of words. The aims of this study is to explore derivational morphology process according theory about types of derivational suffix from Plag (2002) in "Walls" music album by Louis Tomlinson. The method that is used in this study is qualitative research because there is no calculation involved and the technique to collect the data is documentation method because the data source is writen text, therefore that is suitable with the method. The data were collected by a music album with the title "Walls" by Louis Tomlinson which contains 12 songs. This study shows that the types of derivational suffix that were found are nominal suffix such as -ion, -ing, -ity, verbal suffix -ize, adjectival suffix such as -ive, adverbial suffix that is -ly. The implication of the study was based on the data, there are derivational suffixes can found in music album, not only in the literary works. From finding derivational suffix data, readers or listeners will understand more about the structure of a word used in the data source and know more about the meaning of each word

This study focuses on derivational suffixes that are found in textbook "Sixth Grade Elementary School" by Evan Moor. This project aims to discover the types and process of derivational suffixes in the data source, the data was collected using an observation method, and it was analyzed using a descriptive qualitative approach. The data used in this research were analyzed using theory from Plag (2003) and McCarthy (2002). The study identified four main types of derivational suffixes: nominal, verbal, adjectival, and adverbial suffixes. A total of 98 data derivational suffixes were identified. The research revealed that nominal suffixes were the most common at 58 data of suffixes included -er, -ing, -ment, -ion, -ance, -ence, and -ness. Followed by adjectival suffixes accounted 22 data, comprise suffixes like -ly, -al, -able/-ible, -ful, -ous, -less, -ive, and -ish. Adverbial suffixes with 15 instances characterized by the suffix -ly. Verbal suffixes was the least frequently found in the data analysis at 3 represented by -ize. Based on the finding indicate that derivational suffixes as the most dominant, it is relevant with the theory which is explain that the number of nominal suffixes were frequently than other suffixes. The process of derivational suffixes which is described with flat structure it really help to decide the changing of word class process happen in the data.

This study was intended to describe the category of inflectional and derivational morphemes found in Reading Texts of 2013 Curriculum English Textbook for the X Grade of Senior High Schools Published by Ministry of Education and Culture. Morpheme is used to refer to the smallest unit that has meaning or serves a grammatical function in a language. The morphemes which can meaningfully stand alone are called free morphemes while the morphemes such as –er and –s, which cannot meaningfully stand alone are called bound morphemes. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative. The results of this study show that Derivational prefixes consist of inter-, eco-, un-, ar-, pre-, re-, pro-, be-, de-, in-, dis-, a-, ex-, auto-, mis-, agri-, em-, ap-, im- and al-. While, Derivational suffixes consist of four categories. Thus are nominal, verbal, adjectival, and adverbial suffixes. First, nominal suffixes, namely –ism, -ation, -al, -ing, -ist, -or, -ity, -er, -ance, -ment, -ion, -ess, -ium, -ature, -ry, -ant, -ce, -ive, -cy, -y, -r, -ge, and -ness. Second, Verbal suffixes, namely –n and –ize. Third, Adjectival suffixes, namely –al, -ly, -ous, -ing, -able, -ic, -ish, -ive, -ian, -ny, -less, -ed, -ary, -nese, -y, and –ful and the last is adverbial suffix –ly. Otherwise, the categories of inflectional morphemes that found in texts consist of Noun suffixes (plural) such as; –s, -ies, and –es, Noun suffixes (possessive) e.g; –s’ and -’s, Verb suffixes (3rd person singular) are –s and –es, Verb suffixes (past tense) are –ed and –d, Verb suffixes (past participle) such as; –n, -d, and -ed, Adjective suffixes (comparative) are –er, - r, and –ier and Adjective suffixes (superlative) are –st and –est. Therefore, based on the result of finding verb suffixes are not found.

A novel written by Katherine Applegate entitled The One and Only Ivan contains so many derivational suffixes. Knowing suffixes could help the English learners enrich their vocabulary knowledge significantly. For the reason above, this research is aimed at. This research uses qualitative method as the research approach that it could help much in finding out the meaning of derivational suffixes and the functions of each derivational suffix. The data of this study are in the form of words which contain English suffixes. The data is collected by downloading The One and Only Ivan novel from internet, and by reading the entire source of the data. To analyze the data, the writers use Plag theory (2002) to sort the suffixes into their categories. After that, the writers classify, and analyze the data as the procedures of data analysis. Finally, the writers take the conclusion. In this novel, there are four types of suffixes. The suffixes found are nominal suffix, adverbial suffix, adjectival suffix, and verbal suffix. The suffixes found in this novel are -ness, -ion, -ation, -ful, -er, -ance, -ence, -ment, -or, -ity, -ty, -ly, -y, -able, -ic, -ive, -en, -ful, -en. All of the suffixes may form other words class from the root word or change the meaning of the words, though not all of them are analyzed completely because of the space limitation.

The study reported in this paper aims to create a list of academic English derivational suffixes to help EFL teachers decide which derivational suffixes to be taught first and help their learners, especially those of higher education, expand their vocabulary size. Gardner and Davies’ (2014) 3,000-word list of Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) academic was analyzed following Hay (2002) and Plag’s (2006) frameworks by counting the number of words containing the suffixes. This study found 1,251 suffixed words in the corpus deriving from 41 suffixes, which comprise 22 noun suffixes, 13 adjectival suffixes, 4 verbal suffixes, and 2 adverbial suffixes. The suffixes were then ordered into 3 levels based on the frequency; 22 suffixes are put in Level 1, 12 suffixes in Level 2, and 7 suffixes in Level 3. Considering the high frequency, all suffixes in Level 1 should gain more attention of the teachers. The more frequent occurrence of the suffix in a variety of context will provide a greater chance for the learners to get more exposure. Hence, mastering it will likely expand learners’ vocabulary size through combining the suffix and existing base.

This research focuses on the use of derivational suffixes in the novel A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. This study aims to identify the types of derivational suffixes and explain how derivational suffixes found influence the class-changing transformations in the novel A Little Princess. Data were collected through documentation method and note-taking technique. In analyzing the data, this research using descriptive qualitative methods. The analysis refers to Plag's (2003) and Bauer's (1983) theories. A total of 161 derivational suffixes were found in the novel. The suffixes include four types: nominal, verbal, adjective, and adverbial suffixes. The most frequently used adverbial suffix is -ly, which appears 64 data. This suffix generally functions to describe the way or attitude in an action or situation. The results also show two types of derivational effects: class-maintaining and class-changing derivation. Class-changing derivation are dominant, with 158 data, while class-maintaining derivation only occurs 3 data. These results highlight the important role of derivational suffixes in enriching vocabulary and forming grammatical structures in literary texts.

The Traditional Arab Grammarians (TAGs) (Sībawayhi 8th century) assigned somewhat similar terminology for the inflectional states of Standard Arabic (SA) verbs and nouns. Verbs could be either marfūʕ ‘Indicative’, manṣūb ‘Subjunctive’, majzūm ‘Jussive’, or mabnī ‘uninflected for mood’, making reference to so-called ‘mood’ endings. Likewise, nouns could be either marfūʕ ‘Nominative’, manṣūb ‘Accusative’, majrūr ‘Genitive’, or mabnī ‘uninflected for case’, making reference to case endings. Thus, TAGs named Ind-marked verbs and Nom-marked nouns marfūʕ, and Sub-marked verbs and Acc-marked nouns manṣūb, in reference to the morphological similarity between the relevant nominal and verbal suffixes. Nonetheless, this similarity is observed between 10 out of the 14 sets of verbal and nominal suffixes in the Ind-Nom paradigm, and between only 4 out of the 14 sets of verbal and nominal suffixes in the Sub-Acc paradigm. In other words, the presumed morphological similarity in terms of suffixes is not perfect. Therefore, this paper aims to show that, at some stage in word formation, the two sets of verbal suffixes, indicative and subjunctive, are identical to the two sets of nominal suffixes, Nom and Acc, respectively, for the verbs and nouns that encode the same number and gender features. After that stage, verbal forms undergo certain word formation operations (feature movement and feature deletion) that affect their structure, resulting in the known surface forms. This account is based on a novel analysis of the SA imperfective paradigm. Both accounts will be presented in purely descriptive terms, without making reference to any available morphological framework.
