Abstract

This paper gives an insight into the range of knowledge and skills necessary to attain advanced nursing practice in relation to acute renal care in intensive care; such as the understanding of and familiarity with physiology, pathophysiology, technology and the related expert skills within which sub-components of research, education, consultation and change agency are clear. However, such knowledge and skills are not finite but developing, advanced practice in intensive care is not limited to just renal care, and an advanced nurse practitioner is likely to be educated to master's level, which encompasses a large body of in-depth knowledge. Furthermore, health care will continue to develop and change in response to the needs of society, and thus advanced practice and advanced practitioners will have to be flexible and similarly adapt and progress.
