Abstract
Beach erosion in Suruga Coast was investigated by the analysis of the hydrographic survey data obtained during 19 years from 1963 to 1982. First, the changes of the offshore distances from a reference point to some contour lines were studied with time and space. It was found that the beach on the downdrift site of the breakwater of the Ohigawa Harbour was eroded in recent years and the maximum retreat of the shoreline was about 100 meters at No. 42, and in addition the rate of littoral drift at No. 20 in the coast was equal to 80,000 m3/yr, when averaged in the period between 1970 and 1982. Besides, the characteristic height of change of the beach profile due to littoral drift was found to be about 8 meters. In Suruga Coast a submarine canyon develops. The annual advance of the offshore contour lines was confirmed by the comparison of the contour maps at No. 14 being located near the canyon and the shoreline direction changes from northeast to north abruptly.
