Abstract
THE primary purpose of this subject analysis is to determine whether or not the production of papers in the field of systematics, as indicated by the literature of polychaetous annelids, is increasing or decreasing with reference to the past. Coincident to this, analyses are made with regard to the production of papers by countries and the language employed. Apparently no literature analysis on systematic zoology exists. Since the principles of scientific nomenclature began with Linnaeus in 1758, there has been a total of 2389 papers through the year 1954 on the systematics of polychaetes. Systematic papers are herein considered to include descriptions of new species, faunistic reports, and monographic studies; excluded are papers dealing with development, physiology, ecology, etc. The basis of this literature analysis was the bibliography of the polychaetous annelids through 1950 which was compiled by Hartman (1951).
