Abstract

Abstract This paper reports the results of an analogue computer study of electron beam focusing by a periodically varying magnetic field. A normalized version of the paraxial ray equation was studied with the computer and plots of beam radius as a function of distance are presented. The items investigated include the effects of the entrance magnetic field, harmonics in the periodic field and amplitude variations in the magnetic field.
