Abstract
The method of local variations for the numerical solution of variational problems was proposed in [II, developed and generalized in [2-S], and applied to the solution of specific problems in 12-71. This paper presents a number of new results on the development of the method of local variations for the solution of variational problems with partial derivatives. In section I the algorithm of the method for the problem of minimizing a non-additive functional of fairly general form is explained, some generalizations and modifications of the method are presented. In section 2 we give a standard programme of the method of local variations (in the form of procedures in ALGOL 60) for variational problems with a non-additive functional depending on functions of two variables; section 3 is devoted to convergence questions and to estimates of the error of the method.
