Abstract

single plate is ±3.4 km/ sec. This mean velocity can be compared with that of 8 . 2 km/sec determined at Victoria4 and with that of 18.3 km/sec determined at Mount Wilson.5 A spectral type of B3 V on the MK system was determined from the present series of plates. This corresponds to a visual absolute magnitude of approximately 2.0. The profiles of the hydrogen and helium lines were found to vary, but the variation was not periodic and no correlation could be found between the width of the line profile and maximum or minimum velocity of approach. In view of the evidence presented above, it is doubtful that 53 Piscium is a member of the β Canis Majoris class. The velocity may vary, but not in a periodic fashion. The radial velocity of this object seems to be irregular like that of the B3 star 23 Sextantis, which has been recently discussed by Sahade, Struve, and Williams.6
