Abstract
We propose four readings on the subject of America in The Artist: the first, on the presence of figures such as Cortes, Pizarro and the Incas in the European theatre, novels, and shows. The second, the literary recreations of the Discovery of the New World, as the basis for the rehabilitation of a Spanish nation situated in that idealised past. The third, the appearance of the Other, the Indian, in the duality with the conqueror, understood in Romantic terms. Finally, the literary testimony of the independence of the American colonies.

La figura de Pizarro estimulaba particularmente la imaginación del período y las piezas teatrales en torno a su gesta que aparecen en esos años se multiplicaron en los distintos idiomas, entre ellas Pizarre ou la conquête de Pérou –melodrame historique en trois actes, en prose et a grand spectacle, París, 1802
En esta obra América –y más específicamente, Lima, mismo escenario americano que el utilizado en Don Álvaro– representa un arquetipo, es el espacio de las riquezas, de la esperanza para los españoles que acudían buscando la oportunidad de labrarse una fortuna, pero fundamentalmente es el espacio del esfuerzo y del trabajo al cual se contrapone una antigua España que reposa en títulos y apariencias
