Abstract
1. 1. d -Amphetamine injections in intact rats increase activity of the pineal gland enzyme, N -acetyltransferase (NAT). 2. 2. The NAT elevation may be mediated in part by the ability of amphetamine to enhance the release, and block the reuptake, of norepinephrine from post-ganglionic sympathetic nerves onto pineal gland β-noradrenoceptors. 3. 3. However, catacholamines released from cells other than those directly innervating the pineal gland may also increase NAT activity following systemic amphetamine injections, inasmuch as the enzyme responses of superior cervical ganglionectomized, adrenalectomized, or combined ganglionectomized-adrenalectomized animals were greatly potentiated following the drug.
