Abstract

Amok represents the episode of multiple homicide (in an open or a confined space), which is sudden and followed by the pronounced affective state of the attacker (anger, hatred, despair, great and uncontrolled anxiety). The main aim of the perpetrators of these attacks is to hurt as many people as possible in as short a time period as possible. This global security problem is present both in underdeveloped and isolated regions and in the most developed areas with a high standard of living, and can be caused by multiple reasons (psychological, social, political, religious). The main features of amok are unpredictability and dynamism and speed of events, and due to that it is also defined as an "active shooter" attack. Because of all these characteristics and multicausality outcomes, amok represents a complex social phenomenon and the form of security threat which requires a multidisciplinary approach and an adequate response of the society in which it appears, primarily in the prevention of this type of violence. In the situation when amok occurs, police officers are the first people who come to the spot and who must prevent the perpetrators in the most effective way, applying the special operational procedures which require good training.
