Abstract

Abstract Admiral and Eunuch are Unlikely Synonyms. But Cheng Ho was both. One of thousands of eunuchs trusted by the Ming Emperor Yung-Lo because he could have no ambitions for his children, Admiral Cheng Ho (1371–1435) led the Chinese Navy on seven expeditions to the “Western Oceans” between 1405 and 1433. His treasure ships, each five times the size of one of the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama’s vessels, brought back tribute from lands along the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, and the Persian Gulf.
