Abstract
Background Patients with severe mental disorders (SMD) have greater mortality than the general population. This is primarily due to increased risk of comorbid somatic illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease, and suicides and unintentional injuries. There is also some evidence of poor access to somatic care in people with SMD.
