Abstract
The island of Ambon, once part of "the Spice Islands", was a nodal point for long-distance trade across the Indian Ocean and subject to European colonial expansion. Today, Ambon City it is the administrative center of the province of the Moluccas, and the island is still home to plurilocal communities that connect this rather peripheral place to other sites of the Indonesian archipelago, the Indian Ocean world and beyond.
