Abstract
Since October 1989 the GfA have been conducting an ambient air measurement program assigned by the HLfU to get a general view of the actual impact by polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) and dibenzo(p)dioxins (PCDD). In 1990, at six sites located in Hessen (Germany) average PCDF/D concentrations (calculated as Toxicity Equivalents according to NATO/CCMS) between 0.048 pg/m 3 (rural reference site) and 0.146 pg/m 3 (industrial conurbation) were determined. At five locations a distinct annual trend of the PCDF/D concentrations was observed with relatively low concentrations in summer and increasing concentrations towards the winter months. On the other hand, the quotient of total PCDF to total PCDD showed a maximum in summer because of a comparatively larger decrease of PCDD towards the summer months. The annual average of the distribution of PCDF/D homologous groups is similar at all six sites. Here the portion of PCDF homologues of total Tetra- to OctaCDF/D decreases with increasing degree of chlorination, whereas PCDD homologues show contrary behaviour. The percental portions of congeners with 2378-chlorine substitution pattern of the corresponding homologous groups show a similar annual average for the different locations.
