Abstract

The study focuses on the phenomenon of amateur theatre of the lower social classes, using the example of the Spiritist Association Bratrství (Brotherhood) in Radvanice in Silesia, today Ostrava-Radvanice (1914–1951). In the years 1918–1939, the association developed a very rich educational, lecture and social activity, headed by exhibitions of media drawings, which was joined in 1926–1939 by an amateur theatre. The dramaturgy of the Brotherhood’s drama department oscillated between original plays with spiritual and occult themes and hilarious plays or musical theatre with the potential to appeal to a wider audience. The company generated two prolific authors who had a major influence on the dramaturgy and artistic quality of the ensemble – Čeňka Štěrbová and Jan Rösner (Kunčický).
