Abstract

In this paper, aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles-reinforced graphene (G)-containing waterborne polyurethane (WPU) coatings were prepared on the EH40 steel substrate. Wear and corrosion resistance of the Al2O3/G/WPU coatings with different Al2O3 contents were investigated by wear test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and salt spray test. Results showed that the Al2O3/G/WPU coatings exhibited highly enhanced wear and corrosion resistance in comparison with the G/WPU coatings. The Al2O3/G/WPU coating with 3 wt.% Al2O3 was found to exhibit the best performance in terms of friction coefficient, wear volume, corrosion current, and impedance. The Al2O3/G/WPU coatings with promising wear and corrosion resistance may find widespread potential applications in polar icebreaking ship steels.
