Abstract
Alternative data sources play a key role in the Monthly State Retail Sales (MSRS) both as inputs to the composite estimator and as sources for validating the MSRS data. This chapter provides an overview of the MSRS data and highlights how this unique data product makes use of alternative data sources. When working with third-party data providers, they often have privacy protections in place that prohibit them from revealing information about the composition of their data. The MSRS data product is designated as an experimental data product by the Census Bureau. Validating the state-level data output from the model was a critical step before the publication of the MSRS data. State revenue and taxation offices maintain records on sales tax collections for the state, including retail sales tax collection. Some states will also publish retail sales tax collections for the state by North American Industry Classification System codes.
