Abstract

In 1980, the Southern Regional Education Board's (SREB) Task Force on Higher Education and the Schools, composed of educational and governmental leaders from throughout the SREB region (15 states1), began the job of taking a close look at how teachers are prepared, considered the shortage of science and mathematics teachers, looked at the quality of the work force, and made 25 recommendations for change in education. Half of those recommendations were aimed at improving the quality of teachers for the region's classrooms. Questions were asked by that committee, such as:
