Abstract
METHICILLIN-resistant (MR) strains of Staphylococcus aureus, those capable of multiplying in the presence of 12.5 µg of methicillin/ml. (eight or more times that tolerated by methicillin-sensitive (MS) strains), are also resistant to other commonly used antibiotics, including other semi-synthetic penicillins and cephalosporins1–7. They can cause major disease6−11 and thus may pose a serious therapeutic problem.
