Abstract

The authors report the case of a 10-year-old child with cheilitis due to a clarinet reed. It was a question of an allergy to giant reed ( Arundo donax), the antigen of which has recently been identified. Its molecular similarity to pollen allergens explains the association with pollinosis, as we observed in the present case. On the other hand, the onset of an allergy to a domestic wood does not have a clear explanation. The diagnosis was based on the history, prick tests, patch tests, serum-specific IgE assays and RAST inhibition. The lesion disappeared with avoidance.
