Abstract

Sustained antiretroviral therapy (ART) during and after pregnancy improves maternal health and substantially reduces horizontal and vertical HIV transmission. However, studies have shown that disengagement from HIV care poses a public health challenge and such interruptions in treatment threaten the benefits of lifelong ART.1 Monitoring of HIV viral load can guide individual patient care and inform programme interventions, including in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV.
