Abstract
Online distance education is increasingly common in the field of library and information science (LIS). At the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, the departments that work together to meet the information needs of distant LIS students and faculty include: the University Library's central services; the Academic Outreach Library; the Library & Information Science Library; the virtual reference service administered by the Reference Library and the Undergraduate Library; and the instructional technology staff and teaching faculty of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. The collections and services they provide typify the library support required by distance education programs. However, three factors distinguish LIS from other disciplines: the information-intensive curriculum; the enduring importance of the physical library; and the importance of librarians as role models.
