Abstract

Alkyl aryl ketones can be used as retention index scale standards in a wide range of eluents comprising different proportions of acetonitriel-pH 7 buffer or tetrahydrofuran-water. In each case, there is a linear relationship between the carbon number of the alkyl aryl ketones and the logarithm of their capacity factors. This scale can be used to calculate the retention indices of test compounds, which were less dependent on small changes in the eluent composition than the capacity factors.
