Abstract

Summary Alkanes of four species of Polytrichum mosses and two species of Porella liverworts have been analyzed. Total amounts of n-alkanes ranged from 31.0 to 51.8 ´g/g dry weight in Polytrichum and from 10.6 to 13.8 ´g/g dry weight in Porella . The chain length distributions showed C 27 , C 29 , and C 31 as main constituents in all species, and within each genus C 29 as well as C 31 were found to be predominating. Generally, alkane profiles of Polytrichum differed from those of Porella by higher odd/even ratios and smaller percentages of the lower homologues C 16 -C 20 . External and internal alkanes obtained by subsequent extraction steps showed only little differences in all species examined.
