Abstract

The alkali resistance of five silicate glass fibers of different composition in a calcium hydroxide saturated solution at 60°C for various periods of time was determined. Analysis of corrosion products and SEM examination of the corroded fibers have revealed remarkable differences in the attack, depending on composition and related to the formation, in some cases, of a protective coating on the surface.
