Abstract
The religious scene in modern Turkey is often described in a way that conceals diversity. This chapter explores the contours of political empowerment and disempowerment among Alevis in Turkey. It gives a brief description of Alevism, followed by details about population characteristics. The chapter looks into Alevi political alignments in the Republican era, focusing particularly on the most recent developments. Two major factors explain this uneasiness between the Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi (AKP) and Alevis. The first and perhaps more important is the ambiguous stance of the AKP leadership towards Alevi identity in Turkey. This aim was realized during the second government formed by the AKP in 2007, with three Alevi MPs taking seats in the parliament as members of the AKP. Keywords:Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi (AKP); Alevis; political empowerment; Turkey
