Abstract

Aldosterone and other corticosteroids are produced by incubated interrenal tissue of three chondrichthyean fishes: the dogfish, Squalus acanthias; the skate, Raja rhina; and the ratfish, Hydrolagus colliei. Use of the double isotope derivative method has permitted the definitive identification of aldosterone from this group of fishes. In addition, the dogfish interrenal produces corticosterone; the skate corticosterone and a small amount of cortisol; and the ratfish cortisol.
