Abstract
ABSTRACT Limited research exists on the effectiveness of mandated treatment for alcohol use disorders (AUD). Using methods from prior research with opioids, this follow-up study focuses on alcohol use, presenting empirical data that suggests mandated treatment is also an effective treatment pathway for individuals with AUD. We explored differences in completion rates between sex and ethnic minorities. To analyze the effects of mandated treatment, differences in completion rates were considered for mandated and non-mandated treatment of males, females, whites, and ethnic minorities. We used 80,480, 81954, and 84,013 cases from Treatment Episode Data Set-Discharges (TEDS-D) from 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively. Several logistic regression analyses showed that individuals mandated to receive treatment experience a greater completion rate. At least 75% of mandated females completed treatment yearly compared to 77% of mandated males. No less than 69% of mandated minorities completed treatment yearly compared to 79% for mandated individuals. Our results suggest that mandated treatment is effective regardless of sex or race/ethnicity.
