Abstract

The number of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) isozymes present in the roots of some aquatic macrophytes was determined. The roots of Nymphaea alba L. and Nuphar lutea (L.) Sm. possess seven and six ADH isozymes, respectively. Nymphoides peltata (Gmel.) O. Kuntze, Littorella uniflora (L.) Aschers,, Luronium natans (L.) Rafinesque and Isoetes lacustris L. produce a lower number of ADH isoztmes. With the exception of the roots of Isoetes lacustris, no difference was found in the number of ADH isozymes after an aerobic of hypoxic incubation of the roots. The results were compared with ethanol production data for these roots obtained from a previous study. A positive correlation was found between the number of ADHs and ethanol production. The possible relevance of ADH polymorphism in the roots of the various species during root hypoxia is discussed.
