Abstract

Abstract The sociology of knowledge arose out at crucial moments in the history at the past century. It has once more leapt into prominence in present-day circumstances, as a direct result of the student unrest in the United States of America. Although the sociology of knowledge originated in, and was perpetuated mainly by European intellectual traditions and contingencies, an acculturation process has taken place and this branch of sociology is at present acquiring international prominence, as a result at the topicality of the occurrences involved. In this article, the background of this field of study is treated briefly in broad outline, but with specified references. The exposition culminates in indications of trends in the field at sociology. The question of ideological thought (in the sense of a veiled interest-determined trend of thought) is again rearing its head in present times and this situation is being dealt with just as it was during the era in which capitalism established itself as a power element.
