Abstract

Leadership practices or styles remain a key focus for organizational researchers for many years. Researchers argue that realizing the potential of a leader by following a certain style will have effective results in the performances of the businesses. The aim of our research is to reveal the effects of leadership styles on the work performance of employees in the sustainability of family businesses. For this purpose, 15 family companies in Istanbul and their businesses registered with the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce and Industry were selected and survey data were collected from a total of 187 employees. According to the research findings, it has been found that the democratic leadership style has a positive effect on employee productivity. However, the effect of autocratic and fully participatory leadership styles on employee performance was found to be statistically insignificant. It is thought that the findings can contribute to the expansion of knowledge about leadership style and employee performance in family businesses.
