Abstract
THE LARGEST first-year funding ever granted by the federal Health Resources and Services Administration is now being implemented in the Lone Star State. In October 1990, $3.1 million was given to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and cooperating schools and communities to establish an Area Health Education Center (AHEC) for the Lower Rio Grande Valley and South Texas. purpose of the 3-year grant (which is expected to become a 9-year program) is to expand health care and enhance health manpower in the valley and along the Texas-Mexico border, where 3 million Mexican Americans live. Many of them are medically uninsured or underinsured. Ciro V.
