Abstract

Water balance technique suggested by Thornthwaite and Mather (1955) was used to estimate hydrological distribution of rainwater in micro-watershed. Agricultural water balance (surplus and deficit) is the balance between water available for agriculture and use for existing crops. The rainwater resource (576.75 hm (hector meter)) i.e. soil moisture (553.41 hm) and surplus water (23.73 hm) available for runoff and infiltration was estimated using GIS techniques for mean rainfall in reviewed area. Soil water is localised resource can be used by the plants from root zone only. Therefore, soil water available only in cropped areas (162.47 hm) was taken into account for estimations of agricultural soil water resource. Wells, small dams and river are water sources for irrigation (206.62 hm). Finally, agricultural water resource was estimated about 299.35 hm and demand 390.64hm for existing crops. The agriculture water balance was estimated negative (91 hm), mainly for rainfed crops promote cultivators to convert them into agricultural labours.
