Abstract

Subject Demographic ageing in China. Significance China has one of the most rapidly ageing societies. By 2050, the percentage of elderly citizens will be similar to many Western countries. This demographic shift has the potential to create serious problems, but policymakers have not made it a priority. Impacts A shrinking labour force will be a major factor behind China's change in economic growth model. The 'silver economy' will create business opportunities in healthcare, travel and leisure, education, luxury goods and financial products. Development of private sector elderly care is hampered by a lack of coordinated policies and national standards.
