Abstract

The FRCS was the last examination taken by most consultant surgeons practising today. It was usually taken as a mid-training exam and those who passed could reasonably expect to complete the remainder of their training and become consultants. There is now a shortage of consultant surgeons because of early retirement and other factors. WIST (Women in Surgical Training) was set up in 1991 to encourage women (and girls) to consider and pursue surgery as a realistic career. Targets to increase the numbers of women surgeons have not been met and, now that there is an overall shortage of consultants, there have been further calls to increase the numbers of women as well as retaining men and women in a shortened training programme to meet future needs.1,2
