Abstract

This study investigates the divorce experiences of 21 men and women in order to understand (a) the perceived connections between divorce and participants' post— divorce thinking about intimate relationships, and (b) changes sought in post-divorce relationships. Sensitizing concepts from social constructionism, attribution and attachment theories guided this study. Qualitative analysis revealed that attributed causes of marital termination were linked to characteristics sought in current relationships. Changes sought included greater equality within relationships, more expressive communication, and improved conflict resolution skills. The divorce experience appears to provide a catalyst for personal growth, but is also linked to greater insecurity in relationships. Gendered differences in the interpretive process also emerged from the data.
