Abstract

We utilize the atomic force microscope (AFM) to perform a careful nanodissection procedure on a single collagen fibril. By precisely incising the fibril and then peeling away exterior layers, its internal structure was successfully exposed for direct visualization. This methodology has the advantage of avoiding unnecessary rough contact with the specific area being examined as well as high lateral frictional forces, both of which can hinder attempts to dissect delicate biological specimens with the AFM.
