Abstract

IntroductionLiver involvement in patients with autoimmune disease is not unusual. Clinical manifestationsSubclinical alterations in liver function tests (mild hypertransaminasemia and cholestasis), are the most frequent forms of presentation. Cirrhosis and fulminant hepatitis are infrequent in this group of diseases. The presence of Budd-Chiari syndrome and nodular regenerative hyperplasia are remarkable, and related to hepatic vein and small intrahepatic arteries thrombosis, respectively. HistopathologyLiver biopsy is not specific and may reveal a variety of subclinical diseases, such as viral hepatitis, steatosis and drug toxicity. TreatmentThere is no specific treatment for these alterations and the management should be directed toward the underlying disease.
