Abstract
Introduction: Traceability is the sterilization of surgical instruments, performed by the Materials and Sterilization Center (MSC), resulting in a reduction in the incidence of Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) associated with the cleaning, disinfection and sterilization processes of health products. Objectives: To analyze in the literature the advantages and means of traceability of surgical instruments in the MSC managed by the nurse for the hospital institution, surgical team and patients. Methodology: This is a narrative review, in which seven articles were selected from electronic databases. Results: Two thematic categories were created for discussion: the advantages of traceability of surgical instruments and the traceability means currently used. Final considerations: The traceability of the process steps, control of inputs, costs and maintenance records of instruments by the MSC assists in the planning of investments in new instruments, contributing to the management and care aspects.
