Abstract
ABSTRACT This research note argues for scholarly attention to campaign finance in order to better understand why more women have not achieved gubernatorial office. We present an exploratory analysis of newly available data with a focus on 2010 to 2018 open-seat primaries. Our findings of gender differences in the structure of campaign receipts demonstrate the need for additional investigation of gubernatorial elections – elections that previous gender and campaign finance studies have overlooked. We identify several areas for scholars to research in the future.
