Abstract

This volume provides a snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in theory, research, and practice in the area of mathematical modelling in education. Recognising at the outset the important development of the subfield of mathematical modelling in mathematics education in the last decades, this chapter presents the main themes of a set of contributions concerning educational research and practice on the teaching and learning of mathematical modelling. The various chapters reflect the work carried out at ICME-14 held in Shanghai in July 2021, within the scope of Topic Study Group 22 and Survey Team 4, whose mission was to systematise the current state-of-the-art on the teaching and learning of mathematical modelling considering interdisciplinary aspects. In the collection are systematic literature reviews that offer an overview of mathematical modelling in mathematics education, and empirical studies adopting different theoretical perspectives and research aims addressing key issues that fall within the learning of mathematical modelling at the school level and the tertiary level, teacher education in modelling and teaching methods. This set of studies is an indicator of the consistency of ongoing research in mathematical modelling and applications. Diversity and complementarity are evident. Opportunities for international cooperation are apparent and key for the advancement of the subfield of mathematical modelling in mathematics education.
